Q I recently had a new floor installed
and there seems to be some slight fluctuation in the boards ; is this normal?
A Yes this is normal to a degree.
Even though fluctuation can be limited by properly acclimating the wood to be
installed, checking the moisture content of the wood before installed
and/or sanded, and keeping the house containing the floor in consistent
conditions: temperature, humidity, amount of light hitting the floor (if a UV
protected finish is not used), etc. -

Q How come pre-finish warranties are so
much longer than raw wood warranties?
A Many pre-finish products are enticing
because of long warranties; however, most people don't realize they aren't what
they seem. This warranties are on finish pealing off the wood, NOT on
fluctuation of the boards such as gapping. Some of the pre-finish floors
are difficult or impossible to sand and/or repair. Leaving the customer
with a short term floor. Raw plank floors can be sanded many times, and if
taken care of, will last the life of your house.
Q Is the use of hardwood
flooring bad for the environment?
A
National
Wood Flooring Association News - Forest Discussions article.
Q If I have waxed my floor in the past,
what are my re-coating options?
A If you have waxed your hardwood
floor, you only have two options. You can either re-coat your floor with
more wax, or you can sand the floor and start from scratch. I personally recommend
poly- urethanes as opposed to wax. It is much easier for a homeowner to
keep their floor looking clean with as little maintenance.
Q What are some things
that can be done to extend the life of my floor?
A
1) Oil based finishes
may take up to a month to fully cure (during period caution must be used)
2)
Water based finishes may take up to two weeks to fully cure (during
period caution must be used)
3)
Felt
protectors must always be
placed on the bottom of all
furniture.
4)
Never
drag objects along floor.
5)
Never
mop floor: if you wish to
clean the floor wipe with a slightly moist shimmy cloth, a floor cleaner can be
bought. (one will be provided by us)
6)
Never
let spills or liquids sit on
wood.
7)
Recommendation
that after one year of wood
being installed, homeowner has the floor buffed
and re-coated with one coat of finish. Re-coating
will be needed over the years.
8)
If floor is exposed to high traffic it should be possibly covered with a
floor rug, or additional coats put on earlier than normal for protection.
9)
Never walk with harsh shoes such as high heals.
